What does that mean, a return to Star Ocean 4? It means I loaded my PS3 copy into a PS3 and started a brand new adventure log. I was holding off on playing this game until after the first of 2020 - I have my reasons for that - but I realized I missed playing the Star Ocean series. A lot.
Now, I'm not going to be able to play the game every day. That's just not possible with how things are right now. I've made it to Lemuris, but I had to do a lot of skipping over a lot of the animated in order to get that far - please note, I can watch the cutscenes on YouTube at any time, and right now, I'm more interested in playing, in getting back into the swing of playing this particular series. Why do I say that? Because it has been so long since I've played SO4 that I forgot about the camera angling. It's actually quite twitchy from what I remember, it's annoying, but then I've got to remember to use the angling when I actually need to, or I'm just spinning in circles.
Story-wise, my opinions haven't really changed. The graphics, however, are more than making up for it. I've remembered why I love this game so much. It's how the artists envisioned these worlds that Edge and his crew explore that keep me coming back. Story missteps are something I can easily fix in the form of a massive fanfiction novel. As I write this, I realize that there's one crucial element missing from both fanfiction and the game itself, and it's that first moment of stepping onto Aeos for Edge. I realize that the game play isn't about to make room for such a minor detail, and I've only encountered one fanfiction that deals with Edge taking in everything that's on Aeos and its differences from Earth. However, that's kind of a later scene, this particular fanfiction, and it's one I'm not sure where it fits in with the actual story line. Still an enjoyable read at any rate.
And that's it for right now. I'm on a mission, a Star Ocean mission, on top of my author career, to play the games and to learn everything I can about the characters. Four games out of, well, eight games played, I've missed quite a few. I'm with several Star Ocean fans out there. I want to play Blue Sphere (set two years after Second Story), but it's one of two not released to North America (there was a mobile game released in Japan before Anamnesis that didn't survive - I'm counting it even though I'm not sure I should right now). I would definitely love to play it, either on the PS4 or Nintendo Switch. We'll see what happens.
At some point, I'm going to compile a list of books and movies that are either based on actual games (like Halo), are part of some gaming franchise (Dungeons and Dragons), or feature gaming as a theme (like The Holder's Dominion and Ready, Player One). I just had to write about The Last Hope today, about why I still love this game, and why I want to see the series continue. It really is a unique series that didn't get proper story treatment after a certain point.
That's all for today! Hope everyone is having a great rest of their weekend!
